FIREWALL

Firewall management and network security for maximum protection of your business network, data, and users against modern threats.

Firewalls have been the first line of defense against cyber threats for many years. Even in an era of cloud solutions, zero trust and identity‑based security, a well‑configured firewall remains essential for a strong security strategy.

Firewalls analyze incoming and outgoing traffic and block threats before they can cause any damage. Without a strong firewall, even the most advanced IT infrastructure remains vulnerable to ransomware, phishing and data breaches.

What exactly does a firewall do?

A firewall functions as an intelligent gatekeeper for your network. It determines, based on predefined policies, which traffic is allowed and which traffic is blocked.

  • Traditional firewalls operate on IP addresses, ports and protocols.
  • Next‑generation firewalls (NGFWs) add additional intelligence, such as behavioural analysis, application control and integration with identity management.

This enables you not only to control who is granted access, but also which applications may be used and how data is allowed to move within the network.

Next-gen firewalls: modern security

Key capabilities of NGFWs:

Application control
(e.g., blocking WhatsApp, allowing Microsoft Teams)

Deep packet inspection
for in‑depth traffic analysis

Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to detect and block attacks

SSL inspection
for encrypted traffic

Integration with identity management

With an NGFW, you are not only responding to security incidents, but proactively preventing them.

Common risks in firewall management

A firewall is powerful, but only if it is properly configured and maintained. Many organizations are exposed to risk due to:

  • Outdated firmware or unnecessary rules
  • Overly broad access rules (“any‑any”)
  • Insufficient logging and monitoring
  • Lack of segmentation, allowing attackers to move laterally within the network

Solution: regular audits, active maintenance, and 24/7 monitoring via our Network Operations Center (NOC).

Firewall management as a service

For many organizations, managing firewalls requires too much time and specialist expertise. With Firewall‑as‑a‑Service from The Networkers, you are always assured of a secure and up‑to‑date environment.

Our approach:

24/7 monitoring and incident response

Regular optimisation of firewall policies

Proactive updates and firmware management

Clear reports and dashboards

Fewer worries, maximum protection.

Compliance & regulations

In sectors such as healthcare, government and financial services, firewall management is a key element of regulatory compliance. We support organizations with:

NEN 7510 (healthcare)

Logging and access control

ISO 27001

Implementation of controls and network protection

BIO (government)

Compliance with security guidelines

NIS2

Network and Information Security in line with the European Cybersecurity framework (NIS2 / European Cybersecurity Act)

In this way, you strengthen not only your security, but also your audit and compliance posture.

Firewalls in LAN, SD-WAN, and Cloud

A modern firewall is no longer confined ot he edge of your network, but evolves in line with your infrastructure:

LAN

Segmentation between departments
and devices.

Cloud

Virtual firewalls in platforms such as Azure and AWS.

SD-WAN

Centralised security with local control.

Our approach: from analysis to ongoing management

Inventory and risk assessment

Design of a future-proof strategy

Implementation of segmentation, logging, and monitoring

Continuous management via our Network Operations Center

This ensures you only invest in what you genuinely need, without paying for unnecessary licences.

Frequently asked questions about firewalling and firewall management

We are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions:

What is an NGFW (Next-Generation Firewall)?

An NGFW is a modern, intelligent firewall that goes far beyond traditional firewalls. In addition to inspecting IP address, port and protocol, an NGFW also analyses the application itself (for example: is this really Microsoft Teams or something else?), user identity, behaviour and the content of the traffic. With features such as deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention (IPS), SSL inspection and application control, an NGFW prevents threats proactively instead of only blocking them reactively.

What is the difference between a traditional firewall and an NGFW?

A traditional firewall primarily relies on IP addresses, ports and protocols (layers 3/4).

An NGFW adds layer‑7 intelligence: application awareness, behavioural analysis, identity integration, IPS and inspection of encrypted traffic (SSL/TLS). As a result, an NGFW blocks far more advanced attacks that traditional firewalls allow to pass, such as malicious applications that abuse port 443 (HTTPS).

Why should I switch to a next-generation firewall?

Because cyber threats today are much more sophisticated: ransomware uses legitimate ports, phishing payloads are hidden in encrypted traffic, and attackers move laterally through your network. An NGFW proactively stops this with application control, deep packet inspection and IPS. Especially in environments with cloud usage, zero trust architectures and remote working, this has become almost indispensable.

What are the key features of a modern NGFW?
  • Application control (e.g. blocking WhatsApp while allowing Teams)\
  • Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) for content analysis
  • Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) to stop known and unknown attacks
  • SSL/TLS inspection (decrypting and inspecting encrypted traffic)
  • Integration with identity management (who is allowed to do what)
  • Advanced logging and reporting for compliance and detection
What risks do I face if my firewall is not properly managed?

Many organisations suffer from:

  • Outdated firmware → known vulnerabilities
  • Broad “any-any” rules → too much access
  • Unnecessary or outdated rules → unclear and risky
  • No or insufficient logging → you do not see attacks
  • No network segmentation → attackers can move around freely
  • These are the most common causes of data breaches and ransomware.
  • Regular audits and 24/7 monitoring help prevent this
How often should firewall rules be reviewed and cleaned up?

At least once a month, and always immediately after major changes (new applications, cloud migrations, staff changes). In dynamic environments (cloud, SD‑WAN) we even recommend more frequent reviews. In our NOC this is done proactively and on a regular basis, ensuring that rules always remain up to date and secure.

Does firewall management also help with compliance (NEN 7510, ISO 27001, BIO, NIS2)?

Yes, absolutely. Good firewall management supports:

  • Logging and monitoring (required for NEN 7510 and BIO)
  • Access control and network segmentation (ISO 27001 control measures)
  • Proactive protection against cyber threats (in line with NIS2 requirements)
  • We have been helping healthcare institutions, government bodies and other organisations for many years to comply with these standards and to successfully pass audits.
What is Firewall-as-a-Service and what are the benefits?

Firewall-as-a-Service means that we take over the complete management: 24/7 monitoring, proactive updates, rule optimisation, incident response, clear reports and dashboards.

Benefits:

  • No more worries about updates or firmware
  • Always up-to-date security
  • Direct access to our specialists
  • Lower internal workload and costs
  • Scalable: you only pay for what you need
Do you also work with virtual firewalls in the cloud (Azure, AWS)?

Yes, we manage both physical and virtual firewalls, including solutions in Azure, AWS and other cloud environments. We ensure consistent security across on premises, SD‑WAN and cloud.
